Atopy

Definition:

A genetic predisposition to develop a group of related allergic diseases: food allergies, eczema, asthma, and hay fever (allergic rhinitis). These conditions are sometimes referred to collectively as atopic diseases.

Pronunciation: AT-uh-pee; ay-TOP-ic
Examples:

Families with a strong history of atopic conditions have been advised by the AAP to breastfeed babies or use hypoallergenic formulas for four to six months before introducing solid foods.
