Grocery Shopping for Food Allergies

Tuesday September 25, 2007

It's hard to make generalizations about how easy it is to buy groceries for restricted diets in smaller or larger geographical areas because so many factors converge to make grocery shopping easier or harder for any given person. Common allergies are usually easier to shop for; shopping for multiple allergies is much, much more difficult. Allergies that overlap with other common diets --- low-fat, low-carb, vegan --- are usually easier to shop for. Large city centers usually have more options, but that's not a hard and fast rule. Some smaller towns and rural areas have excellent stores with knowledgeable staff.

Nonetheless, the types of foods you can expect to find at supermarkets, specialty grocers, warehouse clubs, ethnic grocers, and health food stores are somewhat different. By shopping around in your local area, you'll get an idea of what the prices are and what different stores carry, which can help you organize your time and save money.
