Food Allergy Apps
Name of product:
Restaurant Nutrition ver 1.49 for iPhone/iPodMy Review
This app is primarily aimed at people who are trying to lose weight and/or who have special nutritional concerns (e.g., sodium restriction). However, it includes some features that may be of interest to people with food allergies. As the name suggests, it provides nutritional info on food at a wide variety of chain restaurants.
Some of the pros:
--It has a very long list of restaurants, but can be customized to show only those restaurants where a person actually eats. For each restaurant, there is also a link to find nearby locations.
--On the restaurant list, there is a red medic-alert-type symbol indicating those that have allergy info; the symbol is greyed-out if allergy info is not available.
--The allergy info can be customized so that foods that contain any/all of the top 8 allergens will be excluded from the foods listed for a restaurant. This may be helpful if you want to figure out if there is ANYthing you can eat at a particular place.
--The nutritional/allergy info that is displayed can be customized so that it shows only those items the user is interested in.
Possible cons for those with food allergies:
--Allergy info is apparently provided by the restaurants, so your favorite restaurant may not include this info.
--A very quick test showed some discrepancies between the app and one restaurant's website (soy listed on the website but not in the app). However, the app includes a link, for each item, to report inaccurate data. I submitted a note about the discrepancy I found but I have no idea how they update their data.
Worth a look for people with food allergies who eat out a lot at chain restaurants.
