If your baby is at risk for developing food allergies, doctors recommend introducing foods one at a time. Unfortunately most commercial baby foods have multiple ingredients and may be cross-contaminated with other foods that are manufactured in the same plant. Making your own first foods for your baby is simple and allows you to control the ingredients that your baby is exposed to. This simple applesauce recipe makes a great first food when your baby is ready for solids.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Yield: about 20 baby servings

Ingredients:

  • 4 Apples
  • 1/4 Cup Filtered Water

Preparation:

Peel and core the apple, and cut into chunks. Place in a heavy saucepan on the stovetop. Add water, cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer until the apples are very soft and beginning to fall apart, about 20-25 minutes.

Remove from heat and allow to cool. Puree applesauce in blender or food processor, or strain in a baby food mill.

Spoon into ice-cube trays, cover with plastic wrap, and freeze for future use. One cube is about 1 ounce of applesauce, the perfect baby serving size.

Note: The same method may be used for pears. Simply subsitute four pears for the apples.
