Definition:

Cross-reactivity occurs when antibodies originally created against a given allergen respond to a different allergen. Most of the time, this phenomenon occurs among allergens that are structurally similar or biologically related.

Examples:

Researchers have demonstrated cross-reactivity among many members of the crustacean family, so people who are allergic to one type of shellfish are advised to avoid eating others as a precaution.
