Finding an Allergist

Monday October 22, 2007

If you or your child are experiencing probable food allergy symptoms, one of the first steps to take is to find an allergist to properly diagnose the allergens causing those symptoms. You may also need to find an allergist if your insurance changes or if you move to a new area.

You'll find some of the same tools that you'd use to find any specialist useful for finding a great allergist --- getting a referral from a trusted family physician or internist, asking family or friends for recommendations, or using an online service like UCompareHealthCare. There are also two referral services offered by allergists' professional organizations. One is run by the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI); the other is run by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). Both referral services provide lists of board-certified allergists. The AAAAI service allows you to filter by allergy subspecialty, while the ACAAI offers a phone referral service in addition to their online search.
