Peanuts, Asthma, EpiPens, and Beyond

Wednesday July 23, 2008

  • Maternal diet during pregnancy isn't, at this time, considered to be a significant risk factor for later development of food allergies, which is why most women are not advised by their doctors to avoid common allergenic foods during pregnancy. However, a recent study in the American Journal of Respiratory and Clinical Care Medicine indicates that frequent peanut consumption during pregnancy may be associated with later development of one allergic condition: asthma. The study followed over four thousand children in the Netherlands for eight years. Follow-up study is still required to see if this effect occurs in other studies, so do ask your doctor before restricting your diet during pregnancy. Read more about the study in Science News Review.
  • How do you carry your Epipens? Here's a great upgrade from a Ziploc bag at The Allergic Kid. Being an obsessive knitter, I was curious to see if I could find a knitted version and was delighted to find not only an adorable felted case at Etsy, but also a free pattern at Craftster.
  • Finally, I feel strongly that the best person to let you know whether a restaurant really "gets it" is someone who's been there, which is why I'm excited about Special Gourmets, a community-driven resource for hotel and restaurant reviews specifically catering to "big eight" food allergies and celiac disease. The community combines Google Maps with user reviews to let you find establishments around the world that cater to your allergies or add places in your neighborhood where you've had positive experiences. This is definitely something I intend to use when I'm traveling!
